Széchenyi Chain Bridge

The first bridge

About Széchenyi Chain Bridge

Before the Chain Bridge opened in 1849, Buda and Pest were joined only by boats and a pontoon bridge. Designed by the English engineer William Tierney Clark and built under the Scot Adam Clark, it became a symbol of the united city, and it reopened after a thorough renovation in 2023. Walk across at dusk, when its lights come on.

Why it's on our list

  • The first permanent bridge between Buda and Pest
  • Stone lions at each end
  • Beautiful when lit at night

Opening hours, prices and seasonal openings change, so please check with Széchenyi Chain Bridge before you go.
