The original ruin bar

About Szimpla Kert

In the early 2000s, a group of friends opened a bar in an abandoned building in the old Jewish Quarter, filled it with second-hand furniture and art, and started a craze. Szimpla Kert is still the most famous of Budapest’s ruin bars: a maze of rooms, courtyards and odd corners, with an old car you can sit in, concerts and films. It gets very busy at night; come in the late afternoon for a calmer look, or on Sunday morning for the farmers’ market.

Why it's on our list

  • The original Budapest ruin bar
  • A maze of rooms and courtyards
  • Sunday farmers’ market

Opening hours, prices and seasonal openings change, so please check with Szimpla Kert before you go.
