The back story

About Gresham Palace: an Art Nouveau dream on the Danube

Facing the Chain Bridge, the Gresham Palace is one of the masterpieces of Budapest Art Nouveau: built for the London-based Gresham Life Assurance Company, decayed for decades, and restored as the Four Seasons Hotel in 2004.

An insurance palace

The Gresham Palace was completed in 1906 to designs by Zsigmond Quittner and the Vágó brothers, with offices and luxury apartments for the Gresham Life Assurance Company.

Art Nouveau details

Its wrought-iron peacock gates, mosaics, Zsolnay tiles and glass-roofed arcade make it one of the city’s finest Art Nouveau buildings.

The peacock gates of the Gresham Palace are among the finest in Budapest.

A hotel

After years of neglect, it was restored and opened in 2004 as the Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace.

Our advice: even if you are not staying, have a coffee or lunch at Kollázs to see the lobby and the peacock gates, and look back at the building from the Chain Bridge.
