The back story

About The Great Market Hall

The Great Market Hall, at the Pest end of Liberty Bridge, is the largest and most beautiful indoor market in Budapest, with its iron hall, tiled roof and three floors of food and crafts.

A market palace

The Central Market Hall opened in 1897, designed by Samu Pecz, with a steel-and-glass hall and a roof of colourful Zsolnay tiles. It was restored in the 1990s.

What to buy

On the ground floor, stalls sell paprika, salami, goose liver, pickles, cheese, fruit and vegetables. In the basement are the fish and pickle stalls.

Budapest’s grandest market opened in 1897.

Upstairs

The upper gallery has food stalls serving lángos and Hungarian dishes, and stands selling embroidery, painted eggs and souvenirs.

Our advice: go in the morning on a weekday, when it is quieter; the hall is closed on Sundays. Buy paprika in sealed tins to take home, and have lángos upstairs.
